In the UK, millions of people use public transport every day. Buses, trains, and the London Underground help people get to work, school, and shops. If you visit or live in Britain, you will use public transport often.

Taking the Bus

Buses are everywhere in the UK. In London, the famous red double-decker buses are easy to spot. To take a bus, go to a bus stop and wait. When the bus comes, you can pay with a contactless card or an Oyster card in London.

Travelling by Train

Trains connect cities and towns across the UK. You buy a ticket at the station or online. There are two types of tickets: a single (one way) and a return (there and back).

At the station, look at the departure board. It shows the time, the platform number, and the destination. Useful phrases: "A return ticket to Manchester, please", "Which platform for the train to Leeds?", "Is this the right train for Birmingham?"

The London Underground (The Tube)

The London Underground is one of the oldest metro systems in the world. People call it "the Tube." It has many lines, and each line has a different colour on the map. You will hear the famous phrase: "Mind the gap."

مترو لندن هو أحد أقدم أنظمة المترو في العالم. يسمّيه الناس "التيوب." فيه خطوط كثيرة، وكل خط له لون مختلف على الخريطة. ستسمع العبارة الشهيرة: "Mind the gap" (انتبه للفجوة).

Tips for Using Public Transport

Always check the timetable before you travel. Book train tickets online to save money. In London, use a contactless card — it is cheaper than buying paper tickets. Stand on the right side of the escalator so people can walk on the left.
