British people are famous for being polite. They say "sorry", "please", and "thank you" many times every day.

البريطانيون مشهورون بالتهذيب. يقولون "آسف" و"من فضلك" و"شكرًا لك" مرات كثيرة كل يوم.

If you visit the UK or talk to British people, understanding their manners will help you feel comfortable. It will also help you make a good impression.

Please, Thank You, and Sorry

من فضلك، شكرًا لك، وآسف

British people use these three words more than almost anyone in the world. They say "please" when they ask for anything, even small things.

البريطانيون يستخدمون هذه الكلمات الثلاث أكثر من أي شعب تقريبًا في العالم. يقولون "من فضلك" عندما يطلبون أي شيء، حتى الأشياء الصغيرة.

They say "thank you" after everything — when a shop worker gives them change, when someone holds a door, or when the bus driver stops for them.

يقولون "شكرًا لك" بعد كل شيء — عندما يعطيهم عامل المتجر الباقي، أو عندما يمسك أحد الباب لهم، أو عندما يتوقّف سائق الحافلة لهم.

The word "sorry" is the most interesting. British people say sorry even when something is not their fault. If you step on their foot, they might say "sorry" to you!

كلمة "آسف" هي الأكثر إثارة للاهتمام. البريطانيون يقولون آسف حتى عندما لا يكون الخطأ خطأهم. إذا دست على قدمهم، قد يقولون "آسف" لك!

"Sorry" can also mean "excuse me". For example: "Sorry, could you tell me the time?"

"آسف" يمكن أن تعني أيضًا "عفوًا". مثلًا: "عفوًا، هل يمكنك إخباري بالوقت؟"

Queueing — Standing in Line

الطابور — الوقوف في الصف

British people take queues very seriously. A queue is a line of people waiting for something — a bus, a shop, or a coffee.

البريطانيون يأخذون الطوابير بجدية كبيرة. الطابور هو صف من الناس ينتظرون شيئًا — حافلة أو متجرًا أو قهوة.

You must always join the back of the queue. Never push in front of other people. This is one of the most important rules in British culture.

يجب أن تنضم دائمًا إلى نهاية الطابور. لا تتقدّم أبدًا أمام الآخرين. هذه واحدة من أهم القواعد في الثقافة البريطانية.

If someone pushes in front, British people will not usually shout. They will look annoyed and maybe whisper to the person next to them. But they will be very unhappy.

إذا تقدّم أحد أمام الآخرين، لن يصرخ البريطانيون عادةً. سيبدون منزعجين وربما يهمسون للشخص بجانبهم. لكنهم سيكونون غير سعداء جدًا.

Small Talk

Small talk means short, light conversations about simple topics. British people use small talk with strangers, colleagues, and neighbours.

المحادثات القصيرة تعني أحاديث خفيفة قصيرة عن مواضيع بسيطة. البريطانيون يستخدمون المحادثات القصيرة مع الغرباء والزملاء والجيران.

When someone asks "How are you?" the expected answer is "Fine, thanks. And you?" They do not usually want a long, detailed answer.

عندما يسألك أحد "كيف حالك؟" الإجابة المتوقّعة هي "بخير، شكرًا. وأنت؟" عادةً لا يريدون إجابة طويلة ومفصّلة.

British people also avoid asking personal questions to people they do not know well. Questions about money, age, or religion are considered rude. You might also hear slang words in casual small talk.

البريطانيون يتجنّبون أيضًا طرح أسئلة شخصية على أشخاص لا يعرفونهم جيدًا. الأسئلة عن المال أو العمر أو الدين تُعتبر وقحة. قد تسمع أيضًا كلمات عامية في المحادثات القصيرة.

Table Manners

When eating with British people, there are some simple rules. Keep your mouth closed when you chew. Do not talk with food in your mouth.

عند الأكل مع بريطانيين، هناك بعض القواعد البسيطة. أبقِ فمك مغلقًا عند المضغ. لا تتحدّث والطعام في فمك.

Say "please" when you want something passed to you. Say "thank you" after the meal. If you need to leave the table, say "excuse me".

قل "من فضلك" عندما تريد أن يُمرَّر لك شيء. قل "شكرًا لك" بعد الوجبة. إذا احتجت إلى مغادرة المائدة، قل "عفوًا".
