British humour is famous around the world, but it can be confusing for learners. British people often say the opposite of what they mean, or they joke with a completely serious face.

الفكاهة البريطانية مشهورة حول العالم، لكنها قد تكون محيّرة للمتعلّمين. البريطانيون غالبًا يقولون عكس ما يقصدون، أو يمزحون بوجه جدّي تمامًا.

Once you understand the main types of British humour, you will start to notice it everywhere — in conversations, on TV, and even in the way British people are polite.

Sarcasm

السخرية

Sarcasm means saying the opposite of what you really mean. British people use sarcasm a lot. It is their most common type of humour.

السخرية تعني قول عكس ما تقصده حقًا. البريطانيون يستخدمون السخرية كثيرًا. هي أكثر أنواع الفكاهة شيوعًا عندهم.

The key to understanding sarcasm is the situation. If someone says something positive but the situation is clearly bad, they are probably being sarcastic. British people often joke about the weather this way.

Dry Humour

Dry humour means telling a joke without smiling or laughing. The person looks completely serious, but what they say is funny.

الفكاهة الجافة تعني إلقاء نكتة دون ابتسام أو ضحك. الشخص يبدو جديًا تمامًا، لكن ما يقوله مضحك.

This is not a real complaint. It is a dry, funny way of saying Monday was a normal, boring day. The humour is in how calm and serious they sound.

هذه ليست شكوى حقيقية. إنها طريقة جافة ومضحكة لقول أنّ يوم الإثنين كان عاديًا ومملًا. الفكاهة في مدى هدوئهم وجدّيتهم.

Self-Deprecating Humour

السخرية من النفس

British people often make jokes about themselves. They laugh at their own mistakes, appearance, or abilities. This is called self-deprecating humour.

البريطانيون غالبًا يمزحون عن أنفسهم. يضحكون على أخطائهم أو مظهرهم أو قدراتهم. هذا يُسمّى السخرية من النفس.

This does not mean the person feels bad about themselves. It is a way of being friendly and making others laugh. In British culture, showing off is not polite, so people joke about themselves instead.

هذا لا يعني أنّ الشخص يشعر بالسوء تجاه نفسه. إنها طريقة لتكون ودودًا وتُضحك الآخرين. في الثقافة البريطانية، التباهي ليس مهذّبًا، لذلك يمزح الناس عن أنفسهم بدلًا من ذلك.

Understatement

التقليل من الأمور

Understatement means describing something big or serious as if it is small and not important. British people do this all the time.

التقليل يعني وصف شيء كبير أو جدّي كأنه صغير وغير مهم. البريطانيون يفعلون هذا طوال الوقت.

"A bit" is the magic phrase. British people say "a bit tired" when they are exhausted, "a bit cold" when it is freezing, and "not bad" when something is actually very good.

"A bit" هي العبارة السحرية. البريطانيون يقولون "متعب قليلًا" عندما يكونون منهكين، و"بارد قليلًا" عندما يكون الجو متجمّدًا، و"ليس سيئًا" عندما يكون شيء ما جيدًا جدًا في الحقيقة.

How to Understand British Jokes

Look at the situation, not just the words. If the words do not match the situation, the person is probably joking.

انظر إلى الموقف وليس الكلمات فقط. إذا لم تتطابق الكلمات مع الموقف، فالشخص على الأرجح يمزح.

Watch British TV shows and films. They are full of this type of humour. You will also hear lots of slang words and notice British vs American differences. The more you see it, the easier it becomes to understand.
