British people love their holidays and celebrations. Some are very old traditions, and some are more modern. Learning about these celebrations helps you understand British culture and gives you great topics for small talk.

Christmas (25 December)

عيد الميلاد (25 ديسمبر)

Christmas is the biggest holiday in the UK. Families get together, eat a big meal, and give presents. The traditional Christmas dinner is roast turkey with vegetables and Christmas pudding for dessert.

عيد الميلاد هو أكبر عيد في بريطانيا. العائلات تجتمع وتأكل وجبة كبيرة وتعطي الهدايا. عشاء عيد الميلاد التقليدي هو ديك رومي مشوي مع خضروات وحلوى عيد الميلاد.

New Year's Eve (31 December)

On New Year's Eve, people celebrate the end of the old year and the start of the new one. In London, there are fireworks over the River Thames at midnight. People count down: "10, 9, 8… Happy New Year!"

في ليلة رأس السنة، يحتفل الناس بنهاية السنة القديمة وبداية الجديدة. في لندن، هناك ألعاب نارية فوق نهر التيمز عند منتصف الليل. يعدّ الناس تنازليًا: "10, 9, 8… Happy New Year!"

Many people make "New Year's resolutions" — promises to do something better in the new year, like learning English every day.

Easter (March or April)

عيد الفصح (مارس أو أبريل)

Easter is a spring holiday. Children receive chocolate eggs and go on "Easter egg hunts" — they search for hidden eggs in the garden. Many families have a roast lamb dinner.

عيد الفصح هو عيد ربيعي. الأطفال يحصلون على بيض شوكولاتة ويبحثون عنه في الحديقة في ما يُسمّى "Easter egg hunt." كثير من العائلات تأكل عشاء لحم خروف مشوي.

Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays. This means most people do not work. People say "Happy Easter" to each other.

الجمعة العظيمة واثنين الفصح عطلات رسمية. هذا يعني أنّ معظم الناس لا يعملون. يقول الناس "Happy Easter" لبعضهم.

Bonfire Night (5 November)

ليلة النار (5 نوفمبر)

Bonfire Night is also called Guy Fawkes Night. People light big bonfires and watch fireworks. They eat toffee apples and hot soup. It remembers a famous event from 1605.

ليلة النار تُسمّى أيضًا ليلة غاي فوكس. يشعل الناس نارًا كبيرة ويشاهدون الألعاب النارية. يأكلون تفاح التوفي وحساء ساخن. تُذكّر بحدث شهير من عام 1605.

Bank Holidays
