Common English Mistakes Arabic Speakers Make

When you learn English, you will make mistakes. That is completely normal. But some mistakes are very common for Arabic speakers because Arabic and English have different rules. You can learn more about these differences in our guide to similarities between English and Arabic.

عندما تتعلّم الإنجليزية، سترتكب أخطاء. هذا طبيعي تمامًا. لكن بعض الأخطاء شائعة جدًا للناطقين بالعربية لأنّ العربية والإنجليزية لهما قواعد مختلفة.

When you know your common mistakes, you can fix them. Here are the ones we see most often.

عندما تعرف أخطاءك الشائعة، يمكنك إصلاحها. إليك الأخطاء التي نراها في أغلب الأحيان.

Forgetting "a", "an", and "the"

نسيان "a" و"an" و"the"

Arabic has "ال" (the), but it does not have "a" or "an". So Arabic speakers often forget to use them.

العربية فيها "ال" للتعريف، لكن ليس فيها "a" أو "an". لذلك الناطقون بالعربية غالبًا ينسون استخدامها.

Remember: use "a" or "an" before a singular noun when you mention it for the first time.

تذكّر: استخدم "a" أو "an" قبل الاسم المفرد عندما تذكره لأول مرة.

Putting the Adjective After the Noun

وضع الصفة بعد الاسم

In Arabic, the adjective comes after the noun: "كتاب كبير" (book big). In English, the adjective comes before the noun.

في العربية، الصفة تأتي بعد الاسم. في الإنجليزية، الصفة تأتي قبل الاسم.

Mixing Up "He" and "She"

الخلط بين "He" و"She"

In Arabic, the verb form already shows gender. In English, you must use "he" for a man and "she" for a woman. Arabic speakers sometimes mix them up when speaking quickly.

في العربية، صيغة الفعل تُظهر الجنس. في الإنجليزية، يجب أن تستخدم "he" للرجل و"she" للمرأة. الناطقون بالعربية أحيانًا يخلطون بينهما عند التحدّث بسرعة.

Forgetting the Verb "to be"

نسيان فعل "يكون"

Arabic does not use "is", "am", or "are" in the present tense. So Arabic speakers often leave them out in English.

العربية لا تستخدم "is" أو "am" أو "are" في المضارع. لذلك الناطقون بالعربية غالبًا يحذفونها في الإنجليزية.

Using the Wrong Preposition

Prepositions are small words like "in", "on", "at", "to", and "for". They do not translate directly from Arabic.

حروف الجر كلمات صغيرة مثل "in" و"on" و"at" و"to" و"for". لا تُترجم مباشرة من العربية.

Forgetting the "-s" in Present Tense

نسيان "s-" في المضارع

In English, when the subject is he, she, or it, you add "-s" to the verb: "She works", "He likes", "It rains".

في الإنجليزية، عندما يكون الفاعل he أو she أو it، تُضيف "s-" للفعل: "She works" و"He likes" و"It rains".
