لماذا كلمات الطعام صعبة على الناطقين بالعربية؟
Why food words are tricky for Arabic speakers
في العربية تقول 'أريد أرز' أو 'أريد ماء' — بدون أداة قبل الطعام. في الإنجليزية أحيانًا تحتاج كلمة صغيرة: 'I want some rice' أو 'I want an egg'. الفرق: بعض الأطعمة معدودة (egg, apple) وبعضها غير معدود (rice, water). هذا يحدث لكل الناطقين بالعربية — وستعتاد عليه تدريجيًا.
In Arabic you say 'I want rice' or 'I want water' — with no article before the food. In English you sometimes need a small word: 'I want some rice' or 'I want an egg'. The difference: some foods are countable (egg, apple) and some are uncountable (rice, water). This happens to all Arabic speakers — you will get used to it gradually.

I + like + tea (بدون 'the'!)
في العربية تقول 'الشاي' مع 'ال' عندما تتحدث بشكل عام. في الإنجليزية عندما تتحدث بشكل عام لا تستخدم 'the' — تقول فقط 'tea'.
In Arabic you say 'الشاي' with 'ال' when speaking generally. In English when speaking generally you don't use 'the' — just say 'tea'.

In English, we say "a cup of tea" and "a cup of coffee".
في العربية تقول 'أريد ماء' بدون أداة. في الإنجليزية تقول 'I want water' أو 'I want some water' — أحيانًا تحتاج كلمة صغيرة قبل الطعام.
In Arabic you say 'I want water' with no article. In English you say 'I want water' or 'I want some water' — sometimes you need a small word before the food.

Countable and Uncountable
Some foods are countable: an egg, two eggs.
Some foods are uncountable: rice, bread, cheese. You cannot say "two rices".
Say: "some rice", "a piece of bread", "a slice of cheese".
الإنجليزية تفرّق بين أشياء تعدّها (an apple, two apples) وأشياء لا تعدّها (water, rice, bread). العربية تعدّ كل شيء تقريبًا — لذلك هذا التقسيم يبدو غريبًا لعقلك العربي.
English separates things you count (an apple, two apples) from things you don't count (water, rice, bread). Arabic counts almost everything — so this division feels strange to your Arabic brain.

"Date" means a fruit (تمرة) and a day on the calendar (تاريخ).

Hot = Two Meanings
"Hot" means high temperature (The tea is hot) and also spicy (The pepper is hot).
Use "spicy" to be clear about chilli heat.

Being Polite
Always say "please" when you ask for something. Say "thank you" when you receive it.
إذا نسيت كلمة 'please' أو 'some' — لا بأس. العرب يفعلون ذلك لأن العربية لا تحتاج هذه الكلمات. مع الوقت ستتذكرها تلقائيًا.
If you forget 'please' or 'some' — that's OK. Arabic speakers do this because Arabic doesn't need these words. With time you'll remember them automatically.

"I want" alone sounds rude. Add "please" or use "Can I have…".
✗ I like eat chicken.
✓ I like chicken. / I like eating chicken.
"Like" + noun, or "like" + verb-ing. Never "like" + base verb for food.
✗ Two breads, please.
✓ Two pieces of bread, please.
"Bread" is uncountable. Use "a piece of" or "some".
